Mantra meets the stillness inside. A mantra is a sacred syllable or set of syllables that is used as an object of attention to quiet our mind. Mantras can also be words or prayers. When we focus on the silent sound of a mantra, our mind can stay alert while our consciousness drops into deeper levels of meditation or contemplation.
Traditional mantras are composed of psychically charged sounds that energize, heighten and influence our consciousness. The sounds infuse the nervous system through activating the six major energy centers in the body called chakras. These chakras are wheels that transform energy, creating purification and healing of the body and mind. The subtle vibrations that mantra creates awaken dormant centers of the brain, allowing you to access intuition and higher thought.
The word mantra itself means ‘that which protects consciousness’. Mantras have a potent ability to protect you from your own negative and fearful thoughts. It is the repetitive use of mantras that stills the mind, releasing its tendency to contract and limit. Mantras are useful to diffuse obsessive worry.
Mantras are used in many traditions and religions in order to heighten spiritual energy for ritual and healing. In the Buddhist Vajrayana tradition a very popular chant-OM MANI PADME HUM is sung as praise for peace.
At the heart of the Yogic tradition are the building blocks of all the Hindu mantras- the 50 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet. They are imbued with the highest of energies. AUM NAMAH SHIVAYA is a foundational mantra that initiates the subtle development of spiritual attainment. One of its many translations is ‘adoration of Shiva-the One who purifies’. This mantra contains the five syllables that represent the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether. Thus, when chanted, this mantra energizes and purifies the elements within you.
Mahatma Gandhi practiced his mantra for over 60 years. OM SRI RAMA JAYA RAMA, JAYA, JAYA RAMA. This mantra means to ‘take one across the ocean of rebirth.’ It has the effect of reducing negativity. When you first receive a mantra from a teacher or guide, the easiest way to make it potent for you is to recite it aloud so that your ears will hear it and your brain will register the sound. You then gradually decrease the sound until it is repeated silently. Your brain will register the internal sound and you will continue to hear it long after you have stopped your mantra practice.
"Apa" means “muttering, whispering.” One old text-maintains that a whispered mantra is a thousand times more beneficial than a spoken one, a mental mantra is a thousand times more beneficial than a whispered one, and finally meditating on a mantra is a thousand times more beneficial than its silent recitation. OM is the primordial seed mantra that purifies your entire being. “ As oil is in sesame seeds, As butter is in cream, As water is in riverbeds, And fire is in wood, So is OM within you.” Unknown author
