Are you traveling in the direction you want to go? Every traveler needs a map or guide of some kind. The spiritual traveler has numerous books and teachings for guidance, yet in the end each one of us navigates our own way when it comes down to the real nitty-gritty of waking up.
Each one of us has a path that is unique to us. The spiritual path is an unwinding of past patterning and it is often complex. What each person needs to move through this process is a personal map. The first part of creating this map is to deeply consider the question: “What really matters to me?”
Our mind has ideas of What Matters to us and our heart is pulled to what is meaningful. Often however our focus and energy are moving in the opposite direction. Contemplating our deepest values, those that really matter, is the guiding direction for our path. Without answering this question, we lack the ordering force that can pull scattered energy into focused direction.
When we bring our energy to What Matters, we find our self aligned with a potent guide: Integrity. Integrity is built by our thoughts, words and actions being in alignment. When we have integrity, all of our being moves in unison and we experience a bigger flow within us. If we are guided by anything other than our integrity, we won’t flow in a way that gives rise to real contentment.
Once we choose to focus on What really Matters, we can use it to touch into and inform all aspects of our daily life. What Matters to us will change with time and growth. What is important is that we consistently have a conscious idea of What Matters. Otherwise, we drift blown about by the strongest winds in whatever direction they blow, as opposed to charting our own course.
As we align our thought, word and action to What Matters, our mind becomes the friend of the heart. Power begins to build and be stored because it is no longer dissipated though useless thought, word and action directed toward things that don’t really matter.
We can look at What Matters as God’s will within us. If that seems far-fetched then consider the words of the sage Vasistha who says that self-effort is God’s will. He goes on to mention that this self-effort is well thought out by the spiritual warrior. Thus, to see God at work in our life is to know deeply on What Matters and bring this into action with self-effort.
What Matters is our signature in the spiritual world. The more we align thought, word and action with What Matters during the travails of life, the more true power we are given.
What matters? Is this taking me where I want to go? These are two potent tools to access a deeper connection with spirit in your daily life.
